Try natural deterrents
To make the covers and furniture less attractive to pests, you can use some natural deterrents. These can include anything from essential oils like lavender, rosemary, or basil, mixed with a small amount of rubbing alcohol, to planting naturally protective flowers like marigolds nearby.
Test spray alternatives
You can also use candles or any other method to diffuse the repellants. Citronella candles and torches are known to ward off mosquitos, but they're also effective against flies and similar insects.
Bring out the floor fan
But what's even more effective than candles are floor fans! Flies and mosquitoes are notoriously poor fliers, so running a fan will keep them away from you.
Check your lights
Finally, since many insects are drawn to light, your porch lamps and bulbs may also be bug magnets. You can try replacing your white bulbs with yellow bulbs or sodium vapor lights. Bugs have eyesight that helps them better see shorter wavelengths of light. That includes blues, purples, and even ultraviolet light which is invisible to humans. But, their visual range does not include warmer colors, like red or orange, so the orange or yellowish glow may not attract as many insects. And don't use bulbs that are any brighter than you need because the intensity of the light can also attract bugs.
